New research indicates that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
