The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
