Her Royal Highness's Traditional Christmas Service of Carols Spotlights Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Yuletide celebration at the iconic London venue, with attendees featuring dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will listen to a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as award-winning actors.

Focusing on Kindness and Compassion

The central message of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who established a foundation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a message before the festive gathering.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to young musicians supported by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for instrumental training.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been supported by the trust, with grants helping towards instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be performing at the evening's event.

"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to hone their artistic talents.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for local food charities.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been festooned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
