Delhi Awakens to Dangerous Pollution Following Diwali
Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered exposed to severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" level.
Alarming Pollution Levels
Various sections of Delhi registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents ten times the recommended level set by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x exceeding healthy limits.
Firecracker Ban and Recent Policy Shifts
Since 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that engulfs the capital as the cold season approaches.
Nevertheless recently, the current regional leadership appealed to the highest court to request a relaxation of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically doubted by conservation groups as being only about 30% less polluting – as a compromise between "heritage and public health".
Judicial Verdict and Reality
Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, the court agreed to the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited periods throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.
Several air quality sensors throughout the capital showed contamination peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels recorded during celebrations in at least three years.
Regional Effects
The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.

The situation in the city is caused by a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, development work, rubbish burning and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of Punjab and Haryana.
Throughout these areas, farmers regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, generating hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the capital as colder air arrives.
Public Health and Economic Consequences
Both financial and medical consequences on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple investigations.
The contaminated air leads to elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.
Air quality crisis is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely fatalities per year in the capital.
